Open and Click Tracking: What It Tells You, and What It Costs

Open and click tracking are the two most common forms of email analytics, and both involve a quiet trade-off. They give you visibility into engagement, but they change your message and touch your recipients' privacy. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on what kind of mail you're sending.

How each one works#

Open tracking embeds a tiny, invisible image — a "pixel" — in your email. When the recipient's client loads that image, your platform records an open. It's a proxy for "someone looked at this," not a perfect measure.

Click tracking rewrites the links in your email to pass through a redirect. When someone clicks, they hit the tracking URL first, which records the click and then forwards them to the real destination instantly.

What they're good for#

On marketing mail, this data is genuinely valuable. Open and click rates tell you which subject lines land, which content resonates, and — importantly — which recipients are still engaged. Engagement data drives list hygiene, segmentation, and the whole feedback loop of improving your campaigns.

The costs#

Open tracking has become less reliable. Privacy features in major mail clients — most notably Apple's Mail Privacy Protection — pre-load images for many users, which inflates open counts and blurs what an "open" even means. Treat open rates as a directional trend, not a precise number.

Both forms of tracking add weight and complexity. The pixel and rewritten links make a message look a little more like marketing to spam filters. And rewritten links occasionally confuse the more cautious recipients, who notice their destination isn't quite what they expected.

Then there's privacy. Tracking whether and when someone read your email, and what they clicked, is data collection — and in some jurisdictions and contexts it carries consent obligations. It's worth being deliberate about.

The transactional rule: usually off#

For transactional mail, the calculus flips. You don't need to know the "open rate" of a password reset, and adding a tracking pixel to a receipt just makes a lean, trusted message heavier and slightly more filter-prone for no real benefit. As a default, leave tracking off on transactional streams.

This is exactly why tracking is a per-hive setting in Buzzmark rather than a global one. You turn open and link tracking on for the marketing hive where the data earns its keep, and leave it off for the transactional hive where it's just overhead. Configure it once per stream, to match what that stream is actually for.

The rule of thumb: track where the engagement data will change a decision, and don't where it won't.
