Suppression Lists: Your Quietest Deliverability Tool

Of all the moving parts in email deliverability, the suppression list gets the least attention and does some of the most important work. It's simply the list of addresses you must not send to — and honoring it is what keeps you from digging a reputation hole you can't climb out of.

What lands on a suppression list#

Addresses end up suppressed for a few distinct reasons, and the reason matters:

Hard bounces. The address is invalid or permanently rejecting mail. Sending again just accumulates more failures.

Spam complaints. The recipient marked your mail as spam. Continuing to email someone who has explicitly complained is the fastest way to convince a mailbox provider you're a problem.

Unsubscribes. For any mail where opting out applies, an unsubscribe is a hard stop.

Manual additions. Sometimes you know an address should never be contacted — a role account, a spam trap you've identified, a customer who asked in writing.

Why suppression protects you#

Mailbox providers watch how you treat bad addresses. Repeatedly mailing addresses that bounce or complain is a hallmark of poor list management, and it drags down the reputation that determines whether your good mail reaches the inbox. A suppression list automates the discipline of never making the same mistake twice.

There's a compliance dimension too: honoring unsubscribes and complaint signals isn't just polite, it's expected by anti-spam law and by the providers' bulk-sender requirements.

The key habit: let it work automatically#

The value of suppression comes from it being automatic. When an address hard-bounces or complains, it should be added without you having to think about it, and every future send should check against the list before going out. Manual suppression management doesn't scale and inevitably leaks.

In Buzzmark, suppressions are tracked per account and you can list them at any time to see which addresses are being skipped and why. That visibility is useful in two directions: it confirms your bad addresses are being caught, and it helps you investigate when a specific person says they aren't receiving your mail — sometimes the answer is simply that a past bounce or complaint put them on the list.

It's not exciting, but a well-maintained suppression list is quietly doing more for your inbox placement than almost anything else you'll configure. Leave it on, let it grow, and trust it.
